(Archived) New National President for IEASA

Article Date :4 Nov 2011

In an unprecedented move, Johalna Minnaar has been appointed as the very first female national president of the IEASA since its inception in 1937. Minnaar replaces Dr Andrew Golding who has stepped down as President after a very successful two year term.

The object of the IEASA has always been to look after the professional interests of its members, simultaneously raising industry standards and protecting the consumer.

During Dr Golding’s term of office, the IEASA (Institute of Estate Agents of South Africa) made huge strides in coming to terms with the association’s purpose in reaching these goals and serving the real estate community at large. As time progressed, it became apparent that the industry needed to become organised in terms of Business and Labour if the role- players in any way were to have a say in important matters that influence their future and to meet the main objectives of the IEASA.

In order to bring about this change in the real estate landscape where two separate associations are to function side by side, each within its own Non-profit organisation, the IEASA board elected Minnaar as national president for the interim period whilst the IEASA still represents both Labour and Business constituencies. Once the new labour organisation is properly constituted and registered, it will be in a position to elect its first president and Minnaar will then be in a position to be elected as its first president if the members so wish.

As an employee of one of the large real estate companies, she represents Labour and is all set to lead and guide the ‘new Institute’ which will be called the Property Practitioners of Southern Africa into unchartered waters. All current IEASA members who are employees or estate agents will be eligible for automatic membership of the newly formed association, and all current employer members will automatically be transferred to REBOSA (Real Estate Business Owners of South Africa) which was registered at CIPC on 1 November 2011.

Minnaar says that she is extremely excited to be the very first female president of such a prestigious organisation and in time will be collating a new main board consisting out of employees and estate agents only. “This transition will be handled with much care and will be mentored initially by existing board members (also at regional level) for a period of time until the new boards are completely comfortable and knowledgeable with regards to their new roles,” she says. The ‘interim board’ has undertaken to provide the necessary training to these new boards in respect of important issues like corporate governance requirements of the new Companies Act, roles and responsibilities of directors and officers, protocol in terms of chairing meetings, board committees, strategic planning and implementation, employment equity and the Property Charter and others.

Recent national presidents of IEASA have been: Des Nish (1994-96), Varick von Broembsen (1996-98), Mike Bisset (1998-2000), Jeff Mashigo (2000-02), Bill Rawson (2002-06), Dr Willie Marais (2006-09) and Dr Andrew Golding (2009 -11).
