Institute elevates education and transformation

Article Date :24 Oct 2001

The IEASA's focus on education and the transformation process has been given high escalation with the full-time appointment of a highly qualified educator and a task team to speed up empowerment within the industry.

Fad Gabriel, who holds bachelor degrees in science and education is to head up the Institute's educational department and Segoale Mojapelo and Thabo Matsho were given the vote at the IEASA's August 28 annual meeting in Cape Town to hurry up the empowerment process.

The popular Mojapelo also has two degrees, one in education, while Matsho is active in East Rand townships converting hostels into family accommodation. All three were recently recognised for their potential, by inclusion in the Property Professional's top ten list of Young Lions.

Announcing the appointments after the AGM, Vice-president Bill Rawson, said the two commissions recognised the depth of importance given both issues by the Institute. Ms Kate Colsell has also been appointed full-time co-ordinator of marketing services.

Reviewing the year in the absence of IEASA president Jeff Mashigo, who was unable to attend due to illness, Rawson said some excellent gains had been achieved in some regions, but the body's overall spear of influence and potential had been watered down by "poorly elected regional committees."

He was hopeful this would change and that committee members not involved in the daily practice of selling homes would follow the example of executive councillor Jan le Roux who had resigned from the board for this reason. Le Roux, who would continue as a member, believed passionately that for committee members to give their best to the national body they had to be practising agents and not trainers or drawn from the legal profession.

Rawson said the Institute had been reluctant to accept the resignation of Le Roux, who had been one of its "most absolute loyal servants." "Jan has personally gone to great lengths to help the industry in its transformation, education and in raising its professional standards and for me having worded closely with him and seen his dedication first hand it’s a sad day for the institute."
