Certificates now A3
Homeowners applying for a new electrical certificate of compliance (ECC) now should make sure they get a size A3 certificate supplied by the Electrical Contracting Board.
The old A4 size certificates are not valid for any new electrical installations, or for any installations that have been altered since 1 July last year.
Property owners and estate agents should also note, however, that sellers are not obliged to supply a new ECC if they are in possession of an old one and the electrical system in their home has not been altered or repaired since it was issued.
What is more, if a buyer insists on a new ECC in such circumstances, this would not automatically be for the sellers' account.
• Before allowing anyone to work on an electrical system, you should ensure that he has a valid Electrical Contracting Board card. And if you choose a contractor that is also a member of the Electrical Contractors Association, you have the peace of mind that comes from knowing the work is guaranteed.
